Tour: Street Art – Centimetre by Centimetre

How much space does it take to leave a mark on a city?

Street art is most often associated with large murals and striking works in public space. But street art does not have to cover a wall to change the way we experience a city. Sometimes it is a sticker, paste-up, stencil, small ceramic intervention or handmade object that almost imperceptibly becomes part of the urban landscape.

Street Art – Centimetre by Centimetre is a micro-exploration of Belgrade and its small-scale urban interventions. Starting at Evropska kuća and continuing through the city centre, Čavketov pasaž and Upper Dorćol, we will pay attention to the details that often go unnoticed.

We will look for works made from ceramics, polymer clay, vinyl records, cans and ceramic tiles, as well as stickers, stencils and paste-ups.

During the walk, art historian Ljiljana Radošević from Street Art Belgrade will explore what these small interventions tell us about the city. Who notices them? Who leaves them behind? Why are they placed where they are? And what happens when art begins to claim public space – centimetre by centimetre?

The tour is an invitation to slow down, look more closely and learn to “read” the city through its small and often hidden traces.

Graffiti and street art are an unavoidable part of the urban environment. To imagine a city without graffiti would be the same as to imagine a city without cars. Graffiti is everywhere, exposed to views, weather conditions and emotions – and that makes it ephemeral. The goal of this project is to preserve and document Belgrade’s graffiti and street art.
