Street Art Belgrade is a project of the “Kruna” association

Citizens’ Association Kruna (Crown) is a non-governmental organization founded in 2012 in Belgrade with the aim of promoting and documenting contemporary visual art, with a special focus on graffiti and street art.

The project Street Art Belgrade represents one of the most significant undertakings of the association, born out of the need to preserve street art, which by its nature is fleeting, from oblivion.

The main activities of the project are:

  • Documentation and archive: Through many years of work, the association has collected thousands of photos of Belgrade murals and graffiti, creating a kind of digital archive on the site.
  • The book “Street Art Belgrade” was published in 2016 (by Aleksandar Đorđević). The book contains over 500 photographs and provides a comprehensive insight into the stylistic development of street art in Belgrade.
  • Inclusivity (3D models for the blind): One of the most significant activities is the installation of 3D models of the mural with descriptions in Braille, which allows blind and partially sighted people to “feel” and experience street art.
  • Exhibitions in virtual reality: Association “Kruna” is a pioneer in the digitization of street art in the Balkans. Street art is by its very nature transitory – that’s why we’ve created innovative ways to preserve it permanently in virtual space.
  • Education and tours: We regularly organize expert guided tours (street art tours) and workshops to introduce the general public to the history and importance of urban creativity.
  • International Cooperation (BSBSA): The association is part of the regional project BSBSA (Belgrade Sofia Bucharest Street Art), which connects artists from Serbia, Bulgaria and Romania through workshops, exhibitions and new murals.

Graffiti and street art are an unavoidable part of the urban environment. To imagine a city without graffiti would be the same as to imagine a city without cars. Graffiti is everywhere, exposed to views, weather conditions and emotions – and that makes it ephemeral. The goal of this project is to preserve and document Belgrade’s graffiti and street art.
