UN-HIDDEN CONNECTIONS: Brâncuși through the prism of urban art

This September, Belgrade becomes the meeting place of the Romanian and Serbian urban art scenes. As part of the UN-HIDDEN CONNECTIONS project, from September 4 to 18, the audience can expect an exhibition, talks, creative workshops and two multimedia performances, dedicated to contemporary interpretations of the work and legacy of the famous Romanian sculptor Constantin Brâncuși.

Brâncuși still inspires new generations of artists and opens up space for cultural dialogue that transcends borders. It is precisely on this idea that the UN-HIDDEN CONNECTIONS project is based, which brings to Belgrade contemporary artistic interpretations of his work through the language of urban art.

The project, supported by the Romanian Institute of Culture through the Cantemir program, connects artists, researchers, cultural workers and the public from Romania and Serbia, opening the question of how cultural heritage can live and gain new meanings through contemporary artistic practices.

Exhibition: Brâncuși in a new context

The exhibition presents 14 works of urban art created in Romania, whose authors are Brothers of Light, Endo, Irlo, Kero, Lucian Hrisav, Meri the Zu, Obie Platon, Ocu, Ortak, Sweet Damage Crew and Wheels.

Starting from Brâncuși’s sculptures, symbols and ideas, artists reinterpret them through mural, illustration, paste-up and other forms of urban art. Along with the works, curatorial texts explaining the connections between contemporary interventions and Brâncuși’s work will be presented.

The exhibition thus raises a broader question: how can artistic heritage continue to live when it is taken over and reinterpreted by new generations of artists?

Conversations about Brâncuși and urban art

During the program, two debates will be held that will bring together artists, cultural workers and researchers from Romania and Serbia.

The first talk, “Why Konstantin Brâncuși Matters Today: Reinterpreting Cultural Heritage Through European Urban Art Practices”, will address the ways in which contemporary art can bring cultural heritage closer to new audiences. Cristina Popa, Andrei Racovițan, Ljiljana Radošević and Aleksandar Đorđević take part in the conversation, and it is moderated by art historian Milena Jokanović.

The second debate, “Representations of Brâncuși and his works in contemporary urban art in Europe”, will bring together the artists LUNÃ, Pisica Pãtratã, Jana, TKV and Chenipe, moderated by Ljiljana Radošević.

Workshops and live art

The audience will have the opportunity to get involved in the program through two creative workshops led by Romanian artists Alexandru Ciubotariu (Pisica Pãtratã) and LUNÃ.

Through practical work, participants will explore how Brancusi’s visual language, his sculptures and ideas can be translated into contemporary artistic expression – from the Monumental Ensemble in Târgu Jiu to characteristic motifs from his sculptural oeuvre.

The program will be rounded off with two multimedia performances in which artworks will be created live in conjunction with music. During the performance Pisica Pãtratã and LUNÃ will work in front of the audience, while their creation process will be accompanied by DJ sets of local musicians, creating an atmosphere on the border between exhibition, performance and musical event.

UN-HIDDEN CONNECTIONS connects visual art, music and cultural heritage in this way and shows that a work of art created more than a century ago can still be a starting point for new ideas, conversations and creative encounters. Through the collaboration of artists and cultural actors from Romania and Serbia, the project opens up space for a new European cultural dialogue – and once again shows that art knows no borders.
