This large (4.5m) cat that was painted on one of the facades of Belgrade, in the historic area, was for a while the most loved and talked about mural in this city. The cat had a window instead of one eye and it looked as if it is blinks when the light in the house goes on and off.
At the beginning of his career in 2014, Pijanista had some technical issues because he just stepped into this art form without practicing or socializing with other artists that work on the streets. Therefore his early artworks were lacking in terms of perspective, proportions and technique. More serious deficiency was the lack of ones voice, of the ideas that could make a difference. And then parallel to his portraits of the public personalities in Serbia he started painting other, more significant, topics that will distinguish him on the local scene.
In the year 2015 he painted The Cat which was one of his first conceptual artworks, and one that became most beloved in the years to come. This 4.5m high mural was executed in the Kosančićev Venac (whole area is listed as a cultural heritage site) that in spite of its cultural significance was in quite bad shape and was deteriorating for more than half a century. Up to 2017, when the whole area had been renovated, graffiti, street art and murals were the only interventions that this area had seen in decades. The Cat was particularly popular because the author used the background to his advantage and as an eye of the cat used the small window on the facade. In the evening when the light goes on and off the cat used to look like as if ti was blinking. The author got the inspiration for the mural during his visit to the Hermitage Museum in Sankt Petersburg, where there is a long tradition of cats guarding the artworks from the rodents. And in Belgrade’s context could be interpreted as a metaphoric cat that takes care of Belgrade’s treasures.
