Hope

In Hope|By Ljiljana Radošević|1 Minutes

In later years Hope has stylistically going back to the New Belgrade graffiti roots. In this piece we can see the simplicity synonymous with the throw up but elaborated in such a way that it becomes a piece.

Drawing on the tradition of early New Belgrade’s graffiti, Hope is going back to the simplicity of style and color. This particular feature that was developed in the early days of graffiti in New Belgrade, was as much a part of the rational decision to make letters readable and ‘clean’ as it was a consequence of the lack of the available spraycans and other materials necessary for graffiti writing. And in his attempt to reevaluate and rediscover this tradition Hope is going back precisely to this feature. How impressive and how memorable can you make a graffiti if you employ very limited means of decoration as well as downsized selection of colors? Here the only thing that is left to you are the letters, which brings us back to the very essence of graffiti writing.

Graffiti and street art are an unavoidable part of the urban environment. To imagine a city without graffiti would be the same as to imagine a city without cars. Graffiti is everywhere, exposed to views, weather conditions and emotions – and that makes it ephemeral. The goal of this project is to preserve and document Belgrade’s graffiti and street art.
