Heroj ulice (Hero of the Streets)

In Rage|By Ljiljana Radošević|2 Minutes

Hero of the Streets is one of the tags Rage was using in the early days. Hero of the Streets gave him a possibility to play with the idea of heroes and anti-heroes, and the heroes of everyday life.

For a while Rage was using this little mask as some sort of logo a practice that he will keep in the future with some other tags as well. This piece shows Hero of the Streets mask in a medallion with the commemorative ribbon around it. Principle of representing some of the most respected personalities from the ancient times, has, in this case, been employed to give a status to the artist that dedicates his life to creating art in the streets. And even though Rage has been using almost exclusively characters since he seriously started doing graffiti, this form of behavior is in sync with the principle of graffiti culture. He dedicated him self to doing graffiti, he did it as much as he could and everywhere he could and therefore he earned for him self the ‘fame’ and consequently the ‘crown’ so he can ‘immortalize’ his alias. His reinterpretation of graffiti traditions go further as he invents logos instead of an alias and tags them around the city as a regular tag. He is representing most of the time stylized human characters or animals but he does it in such a way that most of his artworks look like throw ups. They have an outline fill in with little details and another outline just to frame everything. His approach actually gives us a very serious conundrum is he a graffiti writer that uses only characters or is he a street artist who employs graffiti tradition?

Graffiti and street art are an unavoidable part of the urban environment. To imagine a city without graffiti would be the same as to imagine a city without cars. Graffiti is everywhere, exposed to views, weather conditions and emotions – and that makes it ephemeral. The goal of this project is to preserve and document Belgrade’s graffiti and street art.
