Forever

In Hope|By Ljiljana Radošević|1 Minutes

This piece is representative of Hope’s artistic maturity and flawless technique that he developed during first decade of his career. Shortly after that he changed direction and with gained wisdom started returning to the stylistic and color simplicity.

This piece could be interpreted in several different ways, since it is representing an egg and spermatozoa marked by the word ‘forever’. But according to the artist it represents the fertility and the constant cycle of reincarnation that graffiti go through. Underneath was a cult piece made by Jens, officially the father of Belgrade’s graffiti, that did not withstand the passage of time unlike other pieces from 1995 and on which we can still see in Block 45.

At the time when this piece was made Hope marked his first decade in graffiti writing and was reaching a peak of one of the phases he was in at the time. Even though the style that was spontaneously formed and named Belgrade Style in the mid 1990s was always emerging in his artworks, Hope was also very much interested in tradition of wild style graffiti. Here we can see a version of it with which he was experimenting for couple of years. This is a very elegant, almost calligraphic, structure of the letters emphasized by the monochrome black lines. Several years later he stopped all together making sketches and started improvising directly on the wall.

Graffiti and street art are an unavoidable part of the urban environment. To imagine a city without graffiti would be the same as to imagine a city without cars. Graffiti is everywhere, exposed to views, weather conditions and emotions – and that makes it ephemeral. The goal of this project is to preserve and document Belgrade’s graffiti and street art.
